Good Bye Trinity

With a broken heart, I am writing to say that we lost Trinity this morning. Her kidneys finally gave in and she let us know that it was time.

In September, we found out she was showing signs of kidney disease. We changed her food and meds hoping to get it under control. The last week of October, she stopped eating and her back legs were shaky. We got her checked out and found out she was in kidney failure. We were not quite ready to say good bye and decided to hospitalize her for 48 hours. While this did not seem to help based on her blood work, clinically she was better. We found some food she would eat and gave her a bag of saline SQ every night. She hung on for another few weeks while we gave her lots of cuddles until finally she stopped eating and her legs just wouldn't work anymore. 

Trinity celebrated her 13th birthday in July this year. Steve and I bought her when we moved into our first house in Littleton. She came from family in Superior who had brought the litter into Petsmart for vaccinations and my mom saw them. We had just decided that we wanted to get a border collie and the rest is history. From day one, Trinity kept us on our toes. She had so.much.energy! We'd wake up early to walk her and play and would rush home from work to walk her and play. I think she fetched a ball in the house every night for about 5 hours. 

We found flyball and decided to see if she would enjoy it. Trinity was a natural and caught on immediately. A few months later, she was racing consistently and pulling 4.2s as a brand new dog. We have met some of our best friends through flyball and have traveled to Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, and Nebraska to compete. Trinity competed for 10 years, only taking a short break for TPLO surgery. True to form, her last race consisted of one of her legs giving out on her and finishing on 3 legs. She was a part of two Regional Championship Teams and raced with 80 different dogs on 23 different teams. 

Trinity never met a toy she didn't like or a game she didn't excel at. Flyball was always our first love but frisbee was her favorite thing in the world (too bad Steve and I can't throw!), she loved agility (contacts are over rated!), and herding was something she thought she could enjoy (sheep were fun to bark and lunge at!). She was also fond of all balls, tugs, laser pointers, fed ex trucks, buses, bikes and skateboards. Trinity loved hiking and playing in the snow. 

Despite her crazy play drive, she was soft, submissive and a total sweet heart. She loved everyone and ended up being an amazing family dog. She has always been great with the kids, wanting to be be included in everything. 

 

Trinity was Steve and I's first dog. She will always hold a very special place in our hearts. So much of our life now is based on growing up with Trinity. We will forever be grateful to her for providing us with so many wonderful experiences.
